At The Table

June 13 - July 19, 2015
HERE Arts Center

Written and directed by Michael Perlman

From the writer and director of From White Plains,

What happens in a changing America when those at the center of the conversation suddenly find themselves on the periphery, and those who have been marginalized begin to have their voices heard? AT THE TABLE tells the story of a diverse group of friends on their annual retreat away from the city. Expecting good times and casual conversation, as liquor flows and tongues loosen, what emerges is a struggle to define their own identities. No subject is taboo and no issue is safe. While exploring who they believe themselves to be, they discover how others see them and where they stand.

Runtime: 140 minutes (includes a 15 intermission)

Reviews

With meaningful and timely dialogue about important topics in American cultural identity bubbling up throughout the play, perhaps the most exciting and rewarding aspect of Perlman’s At the Table is that he never once offers an answer to the questions his script raises.

★★★★ CRITICS PICK - The result is an absorbing Chekhovian issue play, in which points of privilege are gently pressed, and the political and personal are revealed to be in a fraught long-term relationship.
